In 1807, during one of his trips to France, the Chiavari’s Marquis Stefano Rivarola was impressed by the new style, increasingly popular among the aristocratic classes: the Empire Style.

On his return he brought with him a chair, entrusting the talented cabinetmaker Gaetano Descalzi to be inspired to make a new one. Descalzi worked by subtraction: he lightened the structure, diminished the sections and he used only local materials, resulting in a compromise between lightness and robustness that decreed the success right away.

A production process that has remained unchanged for two centuries, a perfect knowledge and understanding of the leverage and flexibility of wood, a painstaking preparation of the individual elements, hand assembly, cherry and beechwood components, natural ageing and the weaving of Indian flax in the seat are just few of the ingredients rendering this object unique.

LA TIGULLINA

After 50 years, Eligo brings the “Tigullina” armchair back in a limited production series thanks to the collaboration of Giannina and Luisella Sanguineti who made the original designs, inherited from Colombo Sanguineti, available to local craftsmen. With the Tigullina chair, la Sanguineti GB&Figlio received honourable mention at the Compasso d’Oro award in 1956.

LA CAMPANINO

The symbol of the Chiavari Collection, these family of chairs, created by Gaetano Descalzi in 1807, called, in fact, the Campanino. Their original simplicity has a neo-classical look and the unmatchable lightness that distinguishes it since two-hundred years.

LA SOLFERINO

The new Solferino chair: on the 60th birthday of the Superleggera by Giò Ponti, Eligo redefines the aesthetic of the Chiavari chair by respecting the tradition. Its essential geometry respects the construction techniques used in the Chiavari model. The Solferino Chair is proposed in four different variants: the reed weaving, the Tuscany vegetable-tanned leather, rope “Paracord®” and the upholstered, covered with wool.

LA NOVECENTO

This model appeared between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, which embodies a sober design, characterized by a pleasant simplicity due to the absence of moldings and decorations. This elegant chair represents one of the historical models of the Chiavari tradition, with the design of the backrest recalling the style of the same historical period.
